2.3 earthquake in San Kamphaeng allegedly felt in parts of metro area

A small earthquake in San Kamphaeng yesterday, Dec. 22 was allegedly felt by some across the Chiang Mai metro area.

The 2.3 on the Richter scale earthquake struck at 5:27 p.m. at 18.787 N 99.049 E – San Klang near Wat Seemaran not far from the Middle Ring Road (Highway 3029).

The earthquake is somewhat unique as it’s rare to have an earthquake recorded so close to the center of the city.

While the Earthquake Observation Division of the Thailand Meteorological Department did not mark the earthquake as being felt, some on social media claim that they had felt it briefly in Doi Saket, San Sai and as far away as Suthep in Mueang.

The earthquake wasn’t the only one at the weekend with a 1.3 recorded at 12:10 a.m. Dec. 22 at 18.954 N 99.067 E – Pa Phai in San Sai not far from the Mae Kuang Dam.
