Pai – the favorite destination for 20-something backpackers in the north has moved the world – quite literally with an earthquake recorded there yesterday, May 8.
The 2.4 on the Richter scale earthquake struck at 10.26 p.m. at 19.237 N 98.446 E – near Highway 1265 about 10 kilometers from the Pai town center.
There were no reports of damage.
While earthquakes are common in the north they primarily occur along the Phayao fault line that extends from Phayao through the northern part of Lampang Province then into Chiang Rai.
Pai doesn’t sit on an active fault line but isn’t far from the Mae Tha fault line that runs through Chiang Mai.
