39 hospitalized in Mae Hong Son after drinking polluted water in Myanmar

39 people including soldiers and Myanmar nationals were hospitalized after drinking polluted water in Mae Hong Son yesterday evening, July 29.

The patients sort treatment in Baan Mai Mai, Moo 7 Tambon Pang Mapha, Pang Mapha District however the cases related to water being drunk in Baan Khai Luang District, Shan State, Myanmar close by to where those affected sought treatment.

Of the 39 people presenting for treatment, 37 were male and two female with 33 described as being foreign nationals with photos from the scene showing a good portion were children.

The symptoms included nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain with some passing out upon arrival. Initially the worst 11 people were transferred to Pang Mapha Hospital but were followed by the remaining patients overnight as ther conditions worsened.

Although it’s not clear how the soldiers had drunk the water, it’s believed the Myanmar villagers have drunk water from a stream infected with pesticides. The theory is that the pesticides were used upstream and that heavy rain has washed the chemicals downstream where the villagers collected their drinking water.
