Fresh from a government crackdown on illegally imported garlic, the Agriculture Ministry is seeking support from border officials to prevent the illegal export of durian saplings.

The smuggling involves primarily Myanmar nationals crossing border checkpoints in Ranong and Prachuap Khiri Khan with the saplings, which apparently are in high demand in the country.

According to reports, the crackdown was ordered after durian saplings were found at a house near the Singkhon border checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan, an area where the soil is not suitable for growing durians and hence suggesting they were being prepared for illegal export.

The export of durian saplings is banned by the Thai Government for fear that their export would threaten the viability of Thai durian growers.
