Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai Road (Highway 118) has reopened to traffic this morning (Aug. 18) after flood damage took out several sections of the road in Doi Saket.
The worst of the damage, at the 42-kilometer mark, took out the entire road along with a truck that was driving along it at 3 a.m. Saturday gaining national attention in the process (see picture below).
The damage caused delays including the Green Bus service to Chiang Rai and Mae Sai at the Myanmar border being diverted to Lampang and Phayao to get to Chiang Rai versus the far more direct route.
While the highway is once again open to traffic it is still undergoing road work and as of its reopening this morning repaired sections were dirt and had yet been resealed with bitumen. Drivers on the road should expect some delays as the repairs continue.
