Chiang Mai Municipality has canceled all Songkran events and related activities this morning, March 18 in line with the decision of the government to cancel the holiday nationwide.
While fake news reports had previously reported that “Songkran was canceled” in Chiang Mai, before now only major gatherings and water play had been called off.
Previously, the municipality had said that religious and cultural events at the Three Kings Monument and the Thapae Gate would proceed as planned. Decorations for the traditional celebration of the Thai New Year were also planned to proceed as usual.
All events and decorations are now officially canceled.
The municipality asked citizens and tourists to refrain from organizing any activities that involve mass gatherings of people, to refrain from water play and to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water or alcohol gel.
