Three people were arrested yesterday (Sept. 6) after being caught selling bird seed to hapless Chinese tourists at the Thapae Gate.

The arrests, the third time action has been taken against illicit birdseed sellers since the beginning of August is part of a crackdown on the proliferation of pigeons at major tourist sites in Chiang Mai including the Chiang Mai Gate, the Three Kings Memorial and the Thapae Gate.

The three arrested were named by Thai media as being Mr. Surachai Ongkum, 39, a Myanmar national, a 52 year old from Mae Rim and Miss. Pengsiri, 68, of no fixed address.

The three were charged with selling goods in a public place without permission. It’s not clear whether they were kept in jail or given the option of paying a 2,000 baht as has been the case with previous arrests.
