Chiang Rai Governor buys 3,500 kgs of pineapples to address oversupply issue

Chiang Rai has taken a novel approach to dealing with an oversupply of pineapples in the province with Governor Narongsak Osotthanakkorn deciding to buy 3,500 kilograms of the fruit to give away for free to visitors.

The move, which also includes a planned pineapple eating week will be held starting July 4, also includes all government offices being ordered to buy pineapple from local farmers for distribution to retail shops.

In the long term, the Governor said the provincial authority would find ways to set up pineapple processing plants where farmers would be able to directly sell their produce.
