A fault at the Mae Moh Power Station in Lampang this morning, Oct. 4 resulted in widespread power outages across the north.
The fault, a failure in a 230kV transmission system at the power plant at 11:33 a.m. saw power supplies fail in Lampang, Lamphun, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phayao. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) deployed workers to fix the failure shortly after it occurred.
In the Chiang Mai metro area, all power was lost including to traffic lights causing traffic chaos across the city. Chiang Mai Traffic Police were deployed to major intersections to coordinate traffic but with every intersection across town down, there was little they could do. Fortunately, there were no reports of accidents.
Major shopping centers lost power while Chiang Mai International Airport was forced to resort to emergency backup power. Flights were not delayed due to the outage.
Power started to return at 12:10 p.m with power reported to be back on across the metro area by 12:35 p.m. Power to Chiang Rai was reported to have returned by 12:45 p.m.
