After a lull in seismic activity in the north, a small earthquake was recorded in Mae Chaem this morning, Feb. 1.
The 2.9 on the Richter scale earthquake struck at 4:52 a.m. at 18.370 N 98.301 E – Kong Khaek in Mae Chaem between Highway 1 and the Mae Chaem river.
The earthquake was the first in the north since a 1.7 was recorded in Pa Daet, Chiang Rai Jan. 24 and a swarm of earthquakes was recorded between Jan. 17 and 20.
Among the swarm of earthquakes was a 3.0 in Sai Khao in Phan District in Chiang Rai.
The earthquake in Mae Chaem was at the southern end of the Mae Tha fault line that runs north-south through Chiang Mai, Lamphun and Lampang. The fault line is traditionally more active at its northern end as opposed to the southern end where this earthquake in Mae Chaem was recorded.
