61-year-old uncle drowns while fishing in San Pa Tong

The body of a 61-year-old uncle who had been fishing was recovered from a swamp in San Pa Tong last night, Feb. 17.

The body was discovered by emergency services workers in the swamp in Ban Mae Kung, Thung Tom at around 10:30 p.m.

The deceased, Mr. Wittaya Upawan from Moo 6 Thung Tom had left earlier in the day to go fishing but did not return home with relatives raising the alarm after dark.

A search located his hat and shoes next to the swamp with divers deployed to find the body.

How he drowned is unclear with the death expected to be due to the man either cramping in the water or simply getting into trouble and being unable to swim.

The body was taken to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for an autopsy before being released to relatives for funeral rites.
