A big earthquake that struck Laos today near the Thai border was felt across the Chiang metro area.
The 6.4 on the Richter scale earthquake, one of the largest in both Laos and Thai recent history, struck at 6:50 a.m. at 19.456 N 101.376 E- Sainyabuli Province, Laos just across the border from Doi Phk Kha National Park in Nan Province.
There are no reports of damage as of the time of writing but the earthquake was close to towns such as Nabalone and Xayaboury in Laos.
Members of Chiang Mai News in English, the most popular English language news Facebook group by engagement in Chiang Mai flooded the group with earthquake posts and comments. Popular Thai language Chiang Mai sites were also full of comments.
As the earthquake was in Laos, be it near the border, it didn’t break any Thai records. The largest earthquake withn the borders of Thailand was the 6.1 2014 Mae Lao, Chiang Rai earthquake which resulted in the deaths of two people and was allegedly felt in Bangkok.
Update 8:55 a.m. – there are reports now that the earthquake was felt as far south as Bangkok.
