Yesterday, Yala provincial court sentenced seven policemen to eight years in prison each after they were found guilty of extorting money from a local drug dealer and selling seized narcotics to local youths. The court also fined each officer 800,000 baht.
The court identified the seven as Pol Snr Sgt Maj Jirasak Nooplod, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Sitthapak Chandaeng, Pol Sgt Siroj Jaikaewthi, Pol Sgt Amphol Ngu-tul, Pol Sgt Narongdet Shinpakdi, Pol Cpl Thongchai Nurak and Pol Cpl Nathasorn Nuanmai, members of a provincial special operations unit.
All seven had been charged following a complaint claiming they had demanded 100,000 baht from a drug dealer caught with 200 methamphetamine pills, the court said.
The dealer gave them 50,000 baht as down payment and the officers seized the drugs. Some were kept for personal use but most was sold to local youths, it added.
Pol Maj Gen Prabphol Meemongkhol, deputy commander of Provincial Police Region 9, told reporters the case had drawn a lot of public attention.
He said the actions of the police officers had tarnished the reputation of the police force.
