Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai Province Mr. Komsan Suwanampa has ordered a complete ban to all forest areas in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in the latest effort to stop people from starting forest fires.
The park itself had been closed since early March for general use, however, the new ban now includes 100% of all forest areas within the park under any circumstances. Anyone found within a forest area of the park who is not there to fight fires or patrol for fires will be prosecuted.
The decision for a zero-tolerance approach to forest access came after the province declared yesterday that all forest fires in the national park had been extinguished to only find hours later that new fires had been lit in Pong Yaeng, Mae Rim.
The hots spot count for Chiang Mai Province early this morning came in at 121. Fires in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park included the new fires in Mae Rim along with fires near the Sai Yoi Waterfall in Mueang as well.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has deployed the Royal Thai Air Force KA-32 water bombing aircraft and the Army’s MI-17 water bombing helicopter to deal with the new fires in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. Two additional aircraft have been deployed to fight fires in Samoeng while an additional helicopter was being used to fight fires in Chiang Dao.
