Doi Suthep Forest Network plans rally at Thapae Gate Aug. 26

The Doi Suthep Forest Network is planning to hold a rally at the Thapae Gate to protest against the court housing project at the foot of Doi Suthep Aug. 26.

The last protest, held April 29, saw around 1,000 people attend, calling upon the government and the judiciary to demolish the housing project on the basis that it impedes on land within Doi Suthep National Park be it that it legally doesn’t.

After the last protest, the government promised to restore the forest on the site and subsequently planted 20,000 trees but left the houses standing.

Public gatherings for political purposes are illegal under the provisional constitution introduced by Thailand’s military junta. While last time the government took no action against the protesters there is no guarantee that they won’t this time.
