Fire destroys Nong Dok Food Market in Lamphun

A market believed to be over 100 years old was destroyed by fire in Lamphun early this morning, May 30.

The fire broke out in the Nong Dok Food Market in Nai Mueang, Mueang Lamphun at just before 11 p.m. last night.

The fire is believed to have started in a grocery store within the market before spreading to other stalls and shops, including notably a fireworks shop.

Over 30 vehicles representing emergency services from Mueang Lamphun, Pa Sang and even Chiang Mai, police and the Royal Thai Army attended the scene in an attempt to bring the fire under control. It was eventually put out by around 12:45 a.m.

The market has long been Lamphun’s best know food market located opposite the Lamphun moat in the southwest corner of the city.

Damage has not yet been assessed but presumably, given its popularity, the market will be rebuilt.

Police are also said to be investigating the cause of the fire.
