Fish kill off reported in Chiang Mai Irrigation Canal

Up to 10,000 fish are reported to have died due to pollution in the Chiang Mai Irrigation Canal, the canal that follows Highway 121 – commonly known in English as Canal Road, to the west of the city center.

The fish kill off, on a 1 kilometer stretch of the canal between the Phukom intersection to the Sala Intersection is being blamed on wastewater flowing into the canal after recent heavy rains.

TNews reports that locals are complaining about the smell caused by the rotting fish and are calling on authorities to investigate the fish kill off.

This isn’t the first time there has been a mass fish kill off in the canal with a lawsuit filed against an entrepreneur two year ago who was accused of dumping waste into the canal with a similar outcome.
