Four arrested following raid on illegal gambling operation in Haiya

Four men were arrested following a raid on an illegal gambling operation in Haiya last night, March 29.

The gambling operation was only discovered as part of an operation that was targeting businesses opening illegally in defiance of the current province-wide shutdown order to protect against the spread of COVID-19.

The gambling operation was running as an internet cafe and either police stumbled across it or acted on a tip-off that the business was open.

According to reports, the internet cafe was running an online football gambling service – exactly what football matches they were taking bets on is unknown given most sport is currently in hiatus worldwide.

All four were charged with breaching the Chiang Mai Communicable Disease Committee’s Order No. 2/2563 regarding urgent measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The operator of the business was also charged with providing unauthorized international football betting in breach of the Gambling Act 1995.
