Four people were killed during a shootout between the Royal Thai Army and drug runners in Chiang Rai early this morning, July 24.
The shootout occurred in a forested area of Moo 16 Thoet Thai, Mae Fa Luang District around 1.5 kilometers from the Myanmar border at 1:30 a.m.
According to reports, an army drug patrol in the area came across a group of around 15 people with backpacks traversing through the jungle.
When challenged, the men opened fire starting a shootout that saw four of them die. No soldiers are reported to have been injured. Six packs of ice were found with the bodies.
In a separate incident, police seized a vehicle carrying eight million yaba tablets in Mae Salong, Mae Fa Luang at 3 a.m. The driver of the vehicle is reported to have successfully fled when confronted.
