Lanna Co-op warns against making claims against rod daeng drivers without evidence

Mr. Singha Khuntanan, President of Nakhon Lanna Cooperative has warned people against making claims against rod daeng (Songtaew) drivers without evidence following allegations from a Thai actor that one had attempted to rip him off.

“Guy” Ratchanont Suprakob, who along with being an actor is also a model and former singer, posted a video on Instagram yesterday Dec. 18 claiming that he had been quoted 600 baht by a driver to travel one kilometer from a location on Nimmanhaemin Road, Suthep.

In the video, Suprakob said that he knew that using Grab was illegal and he wanted to do the right thing by supporting local drivers but that the same trip on Grab would have only cost 52 baht.

He goes on to note that the driver claimed that the 600 baht charge was due to it being high season.

Within Mueang Chiang Mai, by regulation the amount charged per person per ride is 30 baht.

Instead of accepting that this is a common occurrence, particularly for tourist and expats, Mr. Khuntanan instead said that Suprakob had no evidence of the incident occurring.

According to an interview he gave with, he said that false reports damage the cooperative and the operators of over two thousand rod daengs in Chiang Mai and affect the image and use of Chiang Mai passenger services.
