Monk shoots abbot, villager at Chang Dao wat

A monk described as suffering from a mental illness shot an abbot and a villager at a wat in Chang Dao yesterday, Oct. 8.

The shooting took place at Wat Thep Nimit in Moo 5 Mae Na at around 9:30 a.m.

The monk, Phra Sutham Khamtang, 22 shot Ajahn Mongkol Mongklo, 50 the abbot of Wat Thep Nimit before going on to shoot Mr. Phrom Ma Chong Kham, 52, a local who was worshiping at the wat. Both victims survived and were rushed to hospital.

Phra Khamtang attempted to commit suicide by drinking poison before police arrived at the scene but failed to kill himself.

It’s believed the motivation behind the attack was “resentment” although there is also some suggestion that Phra Khamtang was into black magic and those beliefs may have been behind the attack.

Phra Khamtang was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of an unregistered firearm.
