Multiple small earthquakes recorded in the north

Since the excitement of the 4.1 earthquake recorded in Doi Saket Oct. 18 and the 3.3 aftershock Oct. 27, the north remains seismically active with two new earthquakes yesterday, Nov. 5 after two were recorded at nearly the same locations Nov. 1.

The new earthquakes were minor – the first being a 1.3 on the Richter scale yesterday, Nov. 5 at 20.127,99.518- Tha Ton in Mae Ai province right at the junction of Chiang Rai Province and the Myanmar border.  A 3.2 was recorded at nearly the exact same location – 20.123 N 99.514 E on Nov. 1.

Not far away in Chiang Rai, a 1.6 on the Richter scale earthquake was recorded yesterday, Nov. 5 at 9:37 p.m. at 19.732 N 99.547 E – Wa Wi in Mae Suai, Chiang Rai. In a pattern, a 1.6 was recorded on Nov. 1 at 9:37 p.m. at the exact same location in Wa Wi in Mae Sai.

Notably, all four earthquakes were on the Mae Chan fault, not the more active Phayao or Mae Tha fault lines that have been behind other recent earthquakes this year.

Whether this is the start of a new period of earthquake activity for the north is yet to be seen.
