One dead as military aircraft crashes in Saraphi

One person has died and another injured after a military training aircraft crashed in Saraphi this afternoon, July 11.

The accident occurred at around 4 p.m with the aircraft crashing in a forested area near Wat Pa Poe in Moo 2 Tha Wang Tang although some reports suggest the aircraft came down in Pa Daet – a short distance away.

Lt. Gen. Phongsak Samachai, a spokesman for the Air Force, confirmed the crash, telling media that the aircraft that went down was an L-39, a high-performance jet trainer developed in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War. The plane was part of the 411 Fighter Squadron, known locally as Wing 41.

Despite its antique age, the L-39 has a reasonable operating history with Wikipedia only listing two fatal accidents involving the aircraft.

The cause of the accident remains unknown with the air force sending investigators to the scene.
