Chiang Mai’s growth as a major international tourist destination continues to surge with total passenger movements at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) increasing to 3,848,185 in the period of January to April, up 9.05 percent compared to the same period in 2017.
Within those figures, the more impressive growth came from international flights, with total international passenger numbers coming in at 933,038, up 16.16 percent year-on-year.
The surge in passenger numbers along with aircraft is said to be increasing passenger numbers at Chiang Rai airport as TTR reports that Chinese airlines are being told to fly there due to congestion issues at CNX
Chiang Rai Airport reported 78,298 international passenger movements with total passenger traffic reaching 990,000, up 16.24 percent versus the same period in 2017.
The surge in passenger movements at Chiang Mai was reflected nationwide with Bangkok’s two airports seeing passenger movements reach 36.3 million during January to April, up 6.87 percent, while international passenger numbers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang hit 23,628,259, up 9.03 percent year-on-year.
The largest increase in the country came from Phuket Airport, which saw an 18.45 percent increase in passenger movements with international passenger movements up 26.91 percent to 4,279,899.
