People returning from Bangkok now being screened for coronavirus in Chiang Mai

As hundreds of thousands of people flee Bangkok due to the COVID-19 shutdown, Chiang Mai Province has instigated widespread coronavirus screening to make sure they don’t return and infect others.

Domestic inbound screening is now in place at all bus terminals and Chiang Mai train station. Chiang Mai Airport is now screening all inbound domestic passengers for the virus as well.

It’s not clear at the time of writing whether screening is taking place on major highways but there have been reports that police checkpoints across Chiang Mai have started doing temperature checks.

All people returning to Chiang Mai from Bangkok and surrounding areas are being asked to self-isolate for 14-days in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 locally.

Further, the province has also established a database to register all people returning from the capital to reduce the risk that they may spread the virus locally.
