Seven missing after mudslide hits refugee camp in Mae Hong Son

Seven people remain missing after a mudslide hit a refugee camp in Mae Hong Son Sunday.

The mudslide, brought on by heavy rain, hit the refugee camp, that houses 10,000 displaced people from Myanmar, mostly ethnic Karen, on the Yuman River in Ban Mae La Oon, Sob Moei district, Sept. 15.

A 2-year-old girl was killed in the mudslide while another 12 people were injured.

According to reports, heavy machinery and equipment have been mobilized for a search and rescue operation with as many as 250 emergency services workers, volunteers and Royal Thai Army soldiers on site assisting.

Mae Hong Son governor Sirirat Chumuppakan is said to have chaired a meeting with concerned authorities on Tuesday to discuss aid and rehabilitation at the camp, including a proposal to relocate the camp to a safer location.
