Small quake rattles Phrae after series of larger quakes hit Laos

A small earthquake struck Phrae yesterday, Jan. 14 after a number of larger quakes shook Laos.

The Phrae quake, registering 2.1 on the Richter scale, struck at 17.89 N 99.93 E, near the junction of Highway 11 and 101 in Sai Yoi, Den Chai District at 10:22 p.m.

The quakes further north in Laos started on Jan. 9 (2.6) and have continued to occur since, peaking at 4.9 on Jan. 10 at 21.08 N, 101.69 E, 160 kilometers from the Thai border, followed by a 4.7 on Jan. 14 at 21.85 N, 101.91 E, 230 kilometers from the Thai border.

The Phrae quake is only the second recorded in Northern Thailand this year, the last striking Chiang Rai Jan. 3.
