Soldier dies after being burned fighting forest fire in Mae Hong Son

A Royal Thai Army soldier has died after being burned fighting a forest fire in Mae Hong Son April 1.

The tragic accident occurred in in Ban Pang Kham in Pang Mapha District, at around 2:20 p.m.

The soldier, Piyaphan Saensuk from Phayao was fighting a fire in the area when he stumbled into a pit and became stuck in barbed wire and was unable to escape. Military troops did manage to extinguish the fire but sadly Piyaphan died later from his injuries.

His body was given a military guard of honor from Mae Hong Son Hospital on the trip to Phayao.

Thai Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha expressed regret over the death and shared condolences to the deceased soldier’s family.

A government spokesperson quoted by MGR Online said that the Prime Minister reiterated strict law enforcement measures and requests cooperation for people in the area to not start fires.
