Staff, patients evacuated following chemical leak at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital

Patients and staff were forced to evacuate Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital last night, Sept. 18 following a chemical leak.

The leak was detected on the fourth floor of the Sriphat Building within the Suthep-based hospital at around 6:30 p.m.

Firefighters from the Chiang Mai Municipality’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office attended the scene, discovering that the incident was caused by a spill of Sanacide-R8 although some reports suggest it was Sanacide-R7.

According to the product manufacturer, Sanacide-R8 is “peracetic acid-based cold sterilant, specially designed for dialyzer reprocessing” that “exceeds conventional sterilant in disinfection capability, detergency, and bacterial inactivation effect.” Sanacide-R7 is a similar peracetic acid-based sterilant.

Put more simply, its a concentrated acid used as a cleanser and disinfectant.

No one was injured with the firefighters cleaning the area of the spill and removing the chemical from the premises.
