Ukrainian Embassy Gets 100 Free Room Proposals

Thais In Ukraine

More than 100 Thais are applying to provide free accommodation to Ukrainians stranded in the kingdom amid the war in the Eastern European nation, the Ukrainian embassy revealed on Friday.

The embassy held a press conference in Bangkok to update the media on the latest developments on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

One concern raised by the press was stranded Ukrainians who are unable to return home due to the conflict.

Oleksandr Lysak, Ukrainian charge d’affaires to Thailand, said Kyiv has launched a website to provide free accommodation for Ukrainians in need abroad.

“For the moment, there are more than 100 proposals from Thai citizens we received and we, the Ukrainians, are very grateful for this opportunity to stay in Thailand with free accommodation,” he said.

He said there are more than 3,000 Ukrainians stranded in Thailand.

He said the embassy has asked the Immigration Bureau to consider granting visa extensions to Ukrainians unable to return home, adding the embassy has also been trying to provide assistance to them.

Regarding cash donations, he said money given by Thais is sent to the National Bank of Ukraine daily, noting transfers can be tracked for transparency purposes.

“The issue of transparency is essential and we understand the sincerity of these [donations],” Mr Lysak said. “We will put [the updated figure] of our donations on our official information resources, so people can track where their money goes.”

“At the moment, we have sent more than 5 million Thai baht to our National Bank of Ukraine,” he said.

“Moreover, we are currently making a QR code with Thai banks so Thais can help Ukraine much easier,” Mr Lysak added.
