Uncle charged over Fa Ham Superhighway hit and run that injured three people

A 65-year-old uncle from Luang Nuea Subdistrict, Doi Saket has been charged on multiple counts following a hit and run on the Superhighway in Fa Ham Oct. 27.

Video shared online before police had found the driver (see below) showed a Ford pickup truck exiting the Superhighway on approach to the Mae Jo Road (Highway 1001) turnoff from the middle lane, taking out a motorcycle then driving off.

Three people were on the motorcycle at the time of the accident – Mr. Pongpakorn Panyawee from Chang Klan, Mr. Phattharaphon Nantha from Mueang Chiang Rai and a third unnamed person also from Chiang Rai. All three were taken by ambulance for treatment at Lanna Hospital in Pa Tan.

The driver of the pickup truck, Mr. Somsak Chanthapha admitted to police he was the driver of the vehicle but claimed that he did not know that he had hit the motorcycle.

Police charged Mr. Chanthapha under Sections 43,78,157 and 160 of the Land Traffic Act (1979) and under Sections 27 and 30 of the Road Traffic Act No. 4 (1992). Offenses include:

  • Section 43 – driving a vehicle “with carelessness or recklessness which may cause danger to persons or property”
  • Section 78 – leaving the scene of an accident

Notably, the Section 78 offense is a criminal charge and can include up to one month in prison.
