Upgraded Ban Huak border crossing in Phayao to open Dec. 18

An upgrade of the Ban Huak temporary border crossing in Phu Sang district, Phayao to a permanent crossing has been completed with an official opening scheduled for Dec. 18.

The upgrade, first mooted in January but funded in August has seen the development of customs and immigration facilities allowing tourism and commercial crossings between Phu Sang and Khop district in Sayaboury province, Laos.

For those living in Chiang Mai, the crossing gives an alternative way to enter Laos.

The Ban Huak border crossing is ~240 kilometers or a four-hour drive from Chiang Mai whereas the next closest crossing, in Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai is ~280 km and a 4 hour, 45-minute drive.

The official opening on Tuesday will include a festival involving local school children as well as a fun run.
