Woman arrested for abandoning newborn baby in Chiang Mai police toilet

A 44-year-old woman has been arrested by Mueang Chiang Mai Police for abandoning her newborn baby in a toilet in the police station Feb. 25.

The woman, who was not named by Thai language media but is described as a masseuse who works near the police station in Phra Singh, admitted to police that she did indeed abandon the child.

She claimed that she abandoned the child as her husband is abusive and that she feared for the safety of the child if she brought it home.

She has been charged with “abandoning a child under the age of nine years in a manner that the child is without adult supervision.”

The baby girl is said to now be in good health with over “20 philanthropists” having contacted Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital offering support for the child and to adopt her.
