A 25-year-old woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for a crash on Canal Road, Suthep in January that resulted in the death of two people.
The accident, which saw the death of celebrity stylist Chaturaphat Khemnak, 28 and MC Jenny Panan, was caused when a Black Toyota Vios, driving up the right-hand lane, plowed into a Honda CRV being driven by the victims that was turning right.
Ms. Wichitra Pukboonruang, 26 (pictured) was charged by police January 4 with negligent driving causing death, negligent driving causing damage to property and a charge under the Traffic Act of driving the wrong way on a public road.
The penalty of three years included a penalty of 41,000 baht but was subsequently cut in half by the court who noted that the defendant had pleaded guilty to the charges and had never been in jail previously. As such, Pukboonruang will only serve one and a half years in jail with a fine of 20,500 baht.
In addition, Pukboonruang was also ordered to pay the victim’s family 300,000 for funeral expenses and 500,000 per person as compensation.
The mother of one of the victims, Mrs. Prathin Kobru, 65 told Thairath that the matter didn’t have to go to court and could have been settled privately, however, Ms. Pukboonruang had refused to do so.
