Foreigners were rescued from same Mae Sai cave after 7 days in 1974

As Thailand and the world remains gripped by rescue attempts for the 13 children stuck in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Mae Sai, a former village headman has claimed that it’s not the first time a group of people have been stuck there.

Luang Sae, a former village headman in the area of Tham Luang – Khun Nam Nang Noi , Pong Pha District, Mae Sai, said that in 2519 BE (1974) a group of foreigners had been stuck in the same cave as the missing kids are today and were subsequently rescued after seven days.

He did not go into details but did note that there was no flooding at the time but the foreign hikers were trapped by a cave-in at the site.

Mr. Sae has been working with rescue authorities to identify access points to the cave system based on his participation in the previous rescue and experience with the caves themselves.

The children have been missing since 7 p.m. Saturday and have still not been found as of 12 p.m. Tuesday June 27. Rescue efforts remain ongoing, however, heavy rain in the area has continued to make conditions difficult.
