German man arrested in Chaing Rai for 2010 murder of his wife

A German man has been arrested in Chiang Rai in relation to the murder of his wife back in 2010.

Mr. Heinz Jurgen Theil, 74 allegedly stabbed his wife, Ms. Janjira Jantapool, 17 at the time, 20 times leading to her death at a house in Mae Chan District on April 4, 2010.

Mr. Theil was apprehended by police in front of a clinic in Tambon Robwiang, Mueang Chiang Rai yesterday, Feb. 26.

According to reports, Mr. Theil was initially arrested back in 2010 in relation to the crime but disappeared after being released on 400,000 baht.

While he was eventually found in the Province nine years later, police say that he regularly moved house in the north to avoid arrest.

Notably, Mr. Theil started his relationship with the murdered girl when she was 14.

It’s not clear whether he has also been charged with underage sex or what his immigration status was at the time of his arrest.
