The Thai government has given approval to a long talked about proposal to build a railway line from Den Chai District in Phrae to Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong.
The 85 billion baht project will see a dual railway line run 323 kilometers from the existing State Railways of Thailand Northern Line, through to Muaeng Chiang Rai before ending in Chiang Khong at the Thai Laos border.
The endpoint will eventually tie into railway lines currently under construction in Laos by the Chinese government, allowing freight trains to operate between China and Thailand.
The line will also support passenger traffic with stations to be established in Tambon Mae Tip in Ngao district Lampang, a station at the University of Phayao and a further station in Pa Daet District, Chiang Rai, along with Chiang Rai itself and Chiang Khong.
The route is expected to be completed between 2022 and 2023.
