Large number of Russian migratory birds turn up in Phayao

Birds believed to have originated in Russia are reported to have turned up in Phayao in large numbers at the weekend.

The birds, the breed not described by Thai language media but appearing to be possibly an Ibis of some sort, were reported to number 10,000 in Moo 8 Tha Wang Thong, Mueang Phayao.

Described as a strange site in the area, the birds are believed to have flown south from Siberia to escape cold weather.

Despite the surprise from locals, the birds were welcomed as they are said to eat “insect pests, such as grasshoppers” from local rice paddies.
