Nationwide rabies death toll rises to 14

The nationwide rabies outbreak that has fortunately not struck Chiang Mai but is as close as Tak Province has claimed two new victims bringing the death toll for the year so far to 14 people.

According to The Nation, the latest victim was a 19-year-old man in Buri Ram who’d been bitten in April and did not seek treatment while the second victim, a 55-year-old woman from Rayong was bitten by a infected soi dog in January but only opted for “magical” treatment in place of visiting a hospital.

The vast majority of those who have died to date come from the Isan Region.

In Chiang Mai there have been no reported case however authorities are aware of the risk and have been offering free animal vaccination programs for pet owners as well as working with community members and monks in vaccinating stray soi dogs throughout the province.
