Nok Air is canceling its Bangkok (Don Mueang) – Mae Hong Son service from Aug. 2 due to a lack of demand but the service may return later in the year.
The flights, which started in March 2018 involved three return flights a week running Wednesday, Friday and Sunday using a 72-seat ATR72-500 turboprop.
According to reports, bookings on flights were averaging as low as 6% with even busier flights only being half full due to a lack of tourist demand to visit the provincial capital.
Notably, the drop in demand may be directly related to burning season earlier this year with airport officials saying that the decline in passenger numbers started in April and never recovered.
Officially, Nok says it will start the flights again Oct. 25 to coincide with the start of high season but whether they follow through with that is another matter.
Nok’s withdrawal from the airport leaves only Bangkok Air flying into Mae Hong Son from Bangkok via Chiang Mai and local airline Wisdom Airline flying directly Chiang Mai – Mae Hong Son four times a week.
