One dead in latest shootout between drug smugglers and army in Chiang Rai

A drug smuggler has died in a shootout between the Royal Thai Army and smugglers in Chiang Rai early this morning, Nov. 30.

The shootout occurred just past midnight in Baan Pa Laeng Moo 3, Ko Chang, Mae Sai District around 200 meters from the Myanmar border.

The soldiers confronted a group of around 15 men carrying backpacks and weapons and as has been recently the case, when confronted, the drug smugglers have fired on the RTA in an attempt to flee.

The dead man, who has not yet been identified, was found with 350,000 yaba tablets in multiple backpacks, some of which had presumably been abandoned by others who managed to flee.
