Passengers stranded as freight train derails on the Northern Line

Passengers, including foreign tourists, were stranded overnight after a freight train derailed on the State Railways of Thailand Northern Line.

The freight train came of the tracks in Long District, Phrae at 6:40 p.m. yesterday, Sept. 20, immediately blocking all north and south bound services on the line.

Services already traveling on the line were terminated at Lampang Station north of the derailment and Den Chai Station to the south.

Depending on the report anywhere from 300 to 1,000 people (photos would indicate the lower number) were stranded at Lampang station until replacement buses to take then to Den Chai were organized in the early hours.

As of this morning, Sept. 21, the line remained blocked with specialized equipment being transported to the site to get the train back on the tracks.
