Police officer, drug runner injured in Mae Rim shoot out

A police officer and a drug runner were both injured following a shoot out in Mae Rim early this morning, May 22.

The incident occurred in a forested area near Chiang Mai – Fang Road (Highway 108) in Rim Tai at around 1:20 a.m.

Acting on a tip-off that a shipment of drugs was being transported from Fang to Mueang Chiang Mai, police were maintaining a checkpoint at the highway when a pickup truck and motorcycle approached.

Instead of stopping, the motorcycle fled the scene while the person in the pickup truck fled into a nearby forested area.

Police gave chase with the pickup truck driver, Mr. Wongsakorn Jala, 21 deciding to fire upon police with a sawn-off shotgun.

Police subsequently returned fire with both Mr. Jala and a police officer, Pol Captain Kamchorn Wongsuwan, both being shot.

The two men who fled on the motorcycle. Mr. Jafa Jakao, 22 and Mr. Somporn Jalor, 30 were arrested later.

Police found 200,000 yaba tablets in the back of the pickup truck.
