Series of minor earthquakes strike San Sai

A series of minor earthquakes/ tremors have struck San Sai yesterday (Sept. 27) and this morning (Sept. 28) in a rare outbreak of seismic activity close to the Chiang Mai metropolitan area.

The first earthquake, a 1.8 on the Richter scale struck at 7:12 a.m. yesterday at 19.03N 98.97E, near Chiang Mai-Phrao Road (Highway 1001) in Tambon Mae Faek, followed by a second, at 6:13 p.m. which came in at 1.9 with an epicenter of 18.95N 99.01E near the government office in Tambon Nong Han.

The third earthquake, which registered at 2.1 on the Richter scale struck at 8:44 p.m at 19.01N 99.01E, a forested area of Mae Faek while the fourth, registering at 1.9, struck this morning at 3:29 a.m. at 19.01N 98.99E, this time in farmland in Mae Faek.

Why the series of earthquakes have occurred in San Sai is not known but earthquakes in the broader north are not unknown.
