Three men arrested for selling birdseed at Thapae Gate

Municipal officers and police arrested three people at the Thapae Gate yesterday (Aug. 12) for illegally selling birdseed.

The arrests, the second time action has been taken against illicit birdseed sellers this month, is part of a crackdown on the proliferation of pigeons at major tourist sites in Chiang Mai including the Chiang Mai Gate, the Three Kings Memorial and the Thapae Gate.

Authorities note that feeding pigeons encourage them to breed and increase the risk of diseases spreading, noting in particular that it could cause foreign tourists to be exposed to Avian Influenza.

The three men were taken District 5 police headquarters where they were charged over the offense before being released with a 2,000 baht fine each.
