A tropical storm named “Bebinca” that caused some damage in Hong Kong is heading towards Chiang Mai with the storm predicted to reach the capital of the north on Friday, Aug. 17.
The Thailand Meteorological Department has put in place a weather warning for upper Thailand, including Northern Thailand and the upper parts of the Isan Region from Aug. 16 with residents warned that along with heavy rain and isolated storms there is a risk of flash flooding.
As of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 15, Bebinca was crossing into northern Vietnam with its outer reaches starting to cross into Northern Laos.
In Laos, a severe weather warning has been issued for the provinces of Phongsaly, Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Luang Prabang and Xayaboury for the period of Aug. 16 to 18.
A path for the storm is difficult to predict with some suggesting that it may turn northwest as it crosses Laos with the epicenter of the storm crossing Mae Sai in Chiang Rai, sparing Chiang Mai from the worst of it but not rain.
