Well known Chiang Mai doctor dies in Chiang Rai bus crash

A well known Chiang Mai doctor has died after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with a bus carrying Chinese tourists in Chiang Rai Sunday afternoon, Sept. 15.

The accident occurred on Chiang Saen – Mae Sai Road (Highway 1290) in Ban Sop Ruak, Moo 1 Wiang, Chiang Saeng at around 5 p.m.

The deceased, Dr. Sathon Cheanpanich, 55, a physician at Chiang Mai Ram Hospital was driving a Bangkok-registered BMW when he slammed head-on into the bus, dying in the accident.

The bus driver, Mr. Somchit Khruawong, 55 also of Chiang Mai said that he was transporting a group of Chinese tourists from Chiang Mai on a Golden Triangle tour and they were heading back after a boat trip on the Mekong. Mr. Khruawong said that as he drove the bus towards a bend the BMW came around the bend on the wrong side of the road, slamming into the bus.

A handful of the Chinese tourists on the bus suffered from minor injuries.

The body was transported to Chiang Saen Hospital while police are said to be investigating.
